Comments on the M74 Extension
MAY 2003 (Published in Scotsman, heavily edited. This is the unedited original):
In justifying his condemnation of the M74 extension as a waste of money (Scotsman, May 13), Green MSP Patrick Harvie states "Some 60 per cent of households do not have access to a car, so spending this sum of money will only benefit a small amount of people." Not so. Across Scotland, National Travel Survey statistics show that only 35% of households are without a car. An overwhelming 69% select a car, van or minibus as their main mode of transport to work. Many employees clearly need and use their vehicle for work. So, Mr Harvie seems to have got his figures muddled - spending on public transport only benefits a comparatively small amount of people.
Also, public transport subsidies are provided at a huge cost to the taxpayer and the 'service' providers pay next to no fuel duty. In contrast, motorists pay billions into the exchequer each year and boost the economy with the flexibility of their chosen transport mode.
Motorists have paid for and deserve the M74 extension. Motorists will benefit, as will business and the economy. In short, everyone will benefit. Indeed, was it an illusion, or have I seen coaches (public transport) using Motorways before?
