THE ASSOCIATION OF BRITISH DRIVERS
IN SCOTLAND
A Brief Preface to the Correspondence
My correspondence with the Scottish Executive on the A90 speed cameras all stemmed from a trip to Glasgow when I encountered roadworks (nobody working on them at all, no danger, no closed lanes) with daft 'temporary' limits (that extended way beyond the 'roadworks' site). The letter I received from the Scottish Executive prompted me to delve deeper into what they were saying.
In short, I wanted specific answers to specific questions. Guess what happened... Lots of question dodging, that's what! Crucially, they admit only a couple of the cameras on the route in question are at accident blackspots. The rest are there only to reduce speed.
The replies I received also contradict each other. Compare...
J HAGGERTY'S "With this in mind, speed and accident figures are currently being reviewed to determine whether existing sites are appropriate for inclusion in the scheme" against...
M W CARTNEY'S "The cameras were not installed at accident black-spots, as under the new scheme, but to lower speeds and accidents on the A90 in general. Since that strategy has been successful, there is no value in carrying out the type of individual camera monitoring associated with the cameras provided under the cost recovery scheme." Finally, if this strategy has been successful, why won't they let the public have access to the figures, before and after cameras, so that they can view the proof and make up their own minds? Has the Scottish Executive got something to hide?Simon Tonks
