Automatic Number Plate Recognition (not published)
I have reservations about the proposed upgrading of Aberdeen's CCTV network to incorporate the use of Automatic Number Plate Recognition technology (Evening Express, April 26).
If the intention is to track and snare criminals, then surely such people will respond by using false number plates, probably copied from a legally registered vehicle of the same colour, make and model as 'theirs'. A North East motorist recently fell victim to this very practice. Also, some second hand car buyers deliberately fail to register their car with the DVLA. In both cases, the legally registered keeper will be wrongly accused of committing any offence attributed to their number plate. As well as fallible electronic policing, ANPR can also monitor vehicle movements to enable the introduction of congestion charging - it's currently used in London. So, who should be wary of the upgraded CCTV - savvy criminals or the law abiding?
