THE ASSOCIATION OF BRITISH DRIVERS

BIGGER NEWSBOY TO HERALD BIG CHANGES TO OUR WEBSITE

For many a year the ABD in Scotland has plodded along with little or no change in our website and in the way we do things - but that is all changing in 2008.   There will be more regular input from our Area Co-ordinators but also what is of more interest is that the opportunity, for a trial period, will now exist for our Members to take part in the Website.   To this end we are going to start a monitored forum where Scottish Members of the ABD can write to me, the Webmaster, and provided that the subject matter is deemed suitable and the content not over abrasive we will add it to the website.   Also there will be the ability for the rest of our Scottish Members to respond to forum articles with advice and help.  We regret that this forum will not be open to the general public to post but meantime it has to remain the exclusive "airing ground" for our Scottish Membership.  Feel free to read the posts though whether or not you are Scottish or a Member of the ABD.

The Association of British Drivers

The Association of British Drivers is a non-political, non-profit making, campaigning organisation, presenting informed opinions in the media to counter anti-motoring propaganda. So, even non-members get the benefit - but if we don't do it nobody else is going to. In the past year ABD has become very successful in the media, being approached before such organisations as the AA and RAC to represent the views of motorists. ABD is a member of The Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety (PACTS). Every week ABD is getting mentioned on national and local TV, radio and newspapers. ABD ran the 'Bright Gatsos' campaign, which achieved success by having Gatso Speed Cameras clearly marked on the back and requiring them to be openly sited.

There are no ABD employees; most ABD members have full time jobs, and all campaign in their spare time. Many of the national committee are members of the Institute of Advanced Motorists. The Scottish ABD officers include a retired Police Officer who specialised in traffic duties and others who hold excellent qualifications in various chemistry and engineering disciplines. Some ABD members have their own websites dealing with relevant matters. Most of the active members are mature, professional people, with a technical education and background.

You will see from the list of our Area Representatives that we represent a broad spectrum of society and are exceptionally well qualified to make comment on issues involving the motorist.

What can ABD do for me?

ABD as an organisation probably does not provide any personal service to anybody (that said, feel free to contact a Local Co-ordinator about a particular transport matter of concern to you that is also relevant to ABD). What you get out of ABD is information, and that you take for yourself from the website (but anyone can do that, because it is open to the public), but also from exchanges of e-mails in our internet forums (which are restricted to ourselves) and our Newsletter 'On The Road'.

To initially get informed on the topics ABD campaigns go through our website, which is open to the public: http://www.abd.org.uk/

We also like to make you and our Members aware of the propaganda which is circulated by those opposed to the interests of the motorist. Needless to say we don't wish to feature these sites on our Home Page but they are readily available on our SCOTTISH LINKS PAGE along with other sites which are not necessarily hostile to our cause.

We hope you will join, and take part in our campaigning, including recruiting further members. Even if you do not campaign, the more members we have, then the more we can demand representation on official committees. Feel free to contact us.

Enjoy our Scottish website which puts our slant on things. A great deal of legislation regarding Transport matters is now handled by the Scottish Executive from Edinburgh as part of the devolution of government and it falls to us resident in Scotland to make the politicians aware of our views and needs.

You will find the site breaks into to distinct parts: PROFILES where you can see details of the areas within Scotland where our Representatives do the majority of their campaigning and: CAMPAIGNS where you can view details of their ongoing efforts. Throughout the site there are numerous links which will enable you to switch from one side of the site to the other. Also the names of the Representatives are of course clickable to forward email to them.
